Ambassador “Sully” Sullenberger III will deliver the keynote address at 91ؿ’s 85th Commencement on May 17, 2025, at Hempstead Stadium.
Sullenberger is a decorated pilot, diplomat, and lifelong advocate for safety, leadership, and integrity. He is best known for captaining US Airways Flight 1549 during the “Miracle on the Hudson,” when he and his crew safely landed a disabled aircraft in New York City’s frigid Hudson River on January 15, 2009, saving the lives of all 155 passengers and crew aboard.
Sullenberger, First Officer (now Captain) Jeff Skiles, and their crew received international acclaim for their actions that day, including a congressional resolution recognizing their bravery. Sullenberger was ranked second in TIME’s Top 100 Most Influential Heroes and Icons of 2009 and awarded the French Legion of Honour.
“Ambassador Sullenberger embodies the values we hope to instill in every 91ؿ graduate—resilience, responsibility, and a commitment to the greater good,” said President Steven R. DiSalvo, Ph.D. “In moments of crisis, a steady hand, preparation, and character matter—and I can think of no better voice to inspire our graduates as they embark on their next chapter.”
A native Texan, Sullenberger learned to fly at 16, when he was still in high school. He graduated from the United States Air Force Academy and served as a fighter pilot in the U.S. Air Force before transitioning to commercial aviation. Throughout his four-decade flying career, he remained an ardent safety expert and educator, pioneering safety training programs and accident prevention efforts across the industry.
In 2021, President Joe Biden appointed Sullenberger as the U.S. Ambassador and Representative to the International Civil Aviation Organization, a United Nations Specialized Agency, in Montréal, Québec. During his tenure, he led international advancements in aviation safety, security, and addressing climate change, reasserting U.S. leadership on the global stage.
Sullenberger is also a #1 New York Times bestselling author of Highest Duty: My Search for What Really Matters and Making a Difference: Stories of Vision and Courage from America's Leaders. He was the subject of the 2016 film Sully, directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Tom Hanks. His life’s work inspires others to act with courage, lead with purpose, and serve with integrity.
91ؿ’s 85th Commencement ceremony will take place on campus at Hempstead Stadium on Saturday, May 17, at 10 a.m. During the ceremony, Sullenberger will receive an honorary degree for his leadership, lifelong commitment to aviation and citizen safety, and public service.
