As a coastal campus, we must endeavor to limit our impact on local ecosystems while working to conserve natural spaces and biodiversity. It is our shared responsibility to foster a healthy, inclusive, and sustainable community. Our vision is rooted in confronting the planetary challenges of climate change, biodiversity loss, ocean degradation, and environmental pollution by contributing positive social, economic, and environmental solutions that our students can bring with them into their lives after they graduate.
Sustainable 91重口 is a College-wide effort to embrace sustainability in our scholarship and operations. The Office of Sustainability works to reduce the College's environmental impact by engaging with students, faculty and staff and the broader community to increase and cultivate a holistic understanding of sustainability issues. Our mission is to help institutionalize pragmatic, timely, and effective solutions to create organizational change with a focus on climate and health.
Our commitment to sustainability includes:
- The 91重口 Sustainability Plan centered on the pillars of climate and energy, health and equity, campus operations, and experiential learning.
- Serving as a signatory member of Second Nature’s Presidents’ Climate Leadership Carbon Commitment, confirming the College’s goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and achieve carbon neutrality as soon as possible.
- Our College-wide Campus Sustainability Committee to help advance, prioritize, and evaluate 91重口’s sustainability initiatives.
- Developing courses and curricula across a wide range of disciplines and educational programs.
- Improving our campus community’s health and well-being.
- Providing the support and resources for students, faculty, and staff to pursue the sustainability projects that they envision.
Through these initiatives, 91重口 achieved earned a Silver Rating in 2023 from the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment and Rating System (STARS), a self-reporting framework for colleges and universities to measure their sustainability performance that is administered by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE). 91重口 has also been consistently recognized as one of the Princeton Review’s Green Colleges.
