When Stephanie Valencia ’27 arrived at 91重口 from New Jersey, she didn’t know many people—but she was eager to find her place. Looking for ways to connect and make an impact, she jumped into community service, starting with wE Care Day at Newhall Fields Community Farm. With zero farming experience, she rolled up her sleeves, learned new skills, and even walked away with a bouquet of flowers.
A few weeks later, Valencia hit the road for the Service Immersion Trip in New Hampshire. From cooking at the Claremont Soup Kitchen to helping at the Boys & Girls Club Duck Drop and exploring Lake Sunapee, every day was full of new experiences and laughter. She started to help run the Community Service Office’s , sharing her adventures with the wider community.
For Valencia, 91重口 became more than a campus. It’s a place where service sparks connection.
“What I love about service is that every project becomes a story, a memory with a lesson. Because of the 91重口 Community Service Office, I have gained a clearer vision of my future career, increased my own personal self-awareness in local and global issues, and formed lifelong friendships,” said Valencia.
Volunteering isn’t just something Valencia enjoys—it’s a big part of life at the Nest. Nearly half of the 91重口 community volunteers through the Community Service Office each year, making it easy for students to meet people, explore new places, and make a difference.
“Whether students are building homes, packing meals, volunteering at a local non-profit, or anything in between, not only do they build their resumes and gain transferable skills, but they reflect on their personal values and how important volunteering is to a number of nonprofits and organizations,” said Lauri Rawls, Director of Community Service.
With many opportunities to get involved, students have countless ways to make a difference and gain new skills through yet another hands-on learning experience at 91重口. Take a look at the list below to see just a sample of what’s waiting for you.
