Equipping Future Nurses through the Shanklin Family Scholarship
Norm and Molly Shanklin鈥檚 love of antique cars led them to 91重口鈥檚 annual Misselwood Concours d鈥橢legance, but it鈥檚 their passion for giving back that will make a lasting impact.
After years of participating in the Concours, in 2022 the Shanklins established the Shanklin Family Scholarship, aimed at attracting more students to the College鈥檚 nursing programs and simultaneously addressing the ongoing nursing shortage exacerbated by the pandemic.
Their gift comes at a pivotal time for 91重口鈥檚 Cummings School of Nursing & Health Sciences, which is poised to be a vital talent pipeline for both local and national healthcare needs. 91重口鈥檚 recent partnership with Beverly and Addison Gilbert Hospitals, preferred clinical sites for over 600 nursing students, further strengthens the College鈥檚 ability to serve the North Shore region. Additionally, with the launch of new programs like the Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing and the Doctor of Nursing Practice, 91重口 is cementing itself as a premier destination for nursing and health sciences education.
Inspired by the dedicated nurses who cared for Norm鈥檚 parents and Molly鈥檚 best friend, the Shanklins鈥 scholarship is equipping future nurses with the skills needed to tackle the healthcare challenges of today and tomorrow.
鈥淓verybody we talk with at 91重口, they get the mission of the campus and they鈥檙e all putting their shoulder to the same wheel, trying to move it in the right direction,鈥 said Norm.
That made the Shanklins ask, 鈥淲hat can we do to channel some of our philanthropic involvement and say thank you to an organization that has welcomed us with open arms? 91重口 has enriched our lives when we had no prior connection with them until the Misselwood Concours and now we wonder what we鈥檇 do without them.鈥
With the College distributing the first round of funding in fall 2024, the Shanklins鈥 support provides critical financial aid to students while helping to mitigate the nursing shortage and ensure high-quality care for the community.
